| Overlooking the New York Bay is this quiet neighborhood of tree-lined streets with 1 and 2 family homes dating to the late 19th and early 20th century. However its rich history extends back to the 18th century when the British moored the largest fleet ever assembled (at that time) in the Verrazano Narrows, from which the Battle of Brooklyn was launched. While the colonists lost the battle, Washingtons remarkable evacuation of his army across the bay (owing to fog and contrary winds with which current sailors are familiar) represents one of the most important events in US history. Though the area was originally called Yellow Hook for the color of the clay found there, its name was changed to Bay Ridge in the late 1840s, and by the end of the century it had become a waterside retreat for wealthy New York families fleeing Manhattans summer heat. Some of their grand Shore Road mansions still stand today, however with the completion of the 4th Avenue Subway, the Grand mansions gave way to more modest 3 and 4 story homes attracting an ethnically diverse and vibrant community. Increasingly new residents have been attracted to such amenities as the 58 acre Shore Road Park featuring miles of bike and skating trails along with commanding sunset views of the Statue of Liberty and of course, the Verrazano Bridge-one of New York Citys 7 wonders. Also worth mentioning are the miles of restaurants along 3rd Avenue, and Dyker Beach Golf course, one of the citys most beautiful public courses. |
